What is a voice agent?

How agents, projects, numbers and calls fit together.

Last updated:

A voice agent answers phone calls on your behalf. It listens to the caller, understands what they need, replies in a natural voice, and can take actions: end the call, transfer to a colleague, press keypad tones, or call your own systems.

The pieces#

  • Project: a workspace that holds your agents, their phone numbers, and call history. Keep separate businesses or teams in their own project.
  • Agent: the assistant itself, with its instructions (system prompt), first message, language, voice, and behavior.
  • Number: a phone number you attach to an agent so real callers can reach it.
  • Calls: every conversation is recorded (optionally), transcribed, and available for review.

How you work#

You create an agent, tune it, preview it (chat or a test call), then deploy it so it answers real calls. Editing an agent creates a draft: you Save the draft, then Deploy to make it live. Callers already in a call finish on the previous version.
